Welcome to Mrs. Jackson’s ELA Classroom !

In our class, we are becoming better readers, writers, and thinkers.

Our focus this year is to increase our independent reading.

Students, please make sure you are continually reading a book of your choice.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”

 Joseph Addison

BOTH GRADES:   DUE DATE FOR Next book :  March 1

6th Grade:

Students have been working on noticing important information in short stories, annotating the text as they read, and taking notes on the information they think helps them understand the text.

We have also been working on main idea, summarizing, and learning to write commentary (our ideas and thinking about what we read).

Independent Reading:  Fiction book Due March 1.

Parents:  Please make sure you are seeing those reading logs to help keep your student on track!

Thanks so much for all you do to help our kids become better readers and writers.

8th Grade:

Students are applying the annotating skills they learned earlier in the year while reading non-fiction informational text.

They are working on determining the important information from the text and taking some notes on that information.

Students are also working on determing a main idea of sections of a text and writing a summary plan to help them improve their summary writing skills.

Students have been reading a non-fiction AR book this time and are working on taking notes to help them better understand the text.  They will be able to use these notes this time on their AR tests.

Keep encouraging that independent reading!
